... ... Hipster Denial

[ feeling : scared ]
[ hearing : friends on wgn ]

The following entry contains a paper that I have not done for weeks.

Yeah my Professor accepts a blog entry as a paper. I know you’re jealous.

You may ignore it if you like. It’s like a gazillion times longer than any of my previous entries. Send hate letters to poppycock@fancytoy.net. I’m pretty scared posting this as it is, so be gentle?

I miss everyone at Northside. Not only do I miss my “junior” friends, I miss the hipsters. That should be surprising considering I haven’t really shown any fondness towards them.

I guess writing about them all semester has made me miss them.

I must admit, they’re indeed interesting individuals. I mean, before now, I was pretty much infatuated by their eccentricities. I thought of that hipster group as that untouchable cool clique that I wished to be a part of, a label that jocks and cheerleaders would normally have. You usually want to be invited to drinking parties hosted by jocks and/or cheerleaders but to me, I had wished to somehow be invited to some Harry and the Potters concert at the local Barnes & Noble.

I had a deep respect for hipsters. They were more intelligent then any jock or cheerleader even if it was “Nerdside” College Prep.

I really respected them. They brought me great indie music, why wouldn’t I?

Past tense ‘respected’. Well, I think I still have some sort of level of respect towards them just not to a point of admiration as I did before. I respect their strong opinions on politics and pop culture. I respect their individuality and ability to look good in the oddest of fashions.

What I didn’t respect is their approach towards anyone outside of the culture. In the UIC part of facebook.com, there’s a group called “I am a Pretentious Hipster a.k.a. I Love Indie Rock.”. As the group name says: hipsters are pretentious and personally, I don’t like the company of arrogant individuals.

At times this arrogance can be subtle with just ignoring people outside of the culture; they act like any other culture does: use discourse only familiar to members of the culture. But there are moments when they outright reject people, even go out of their way to bitch at people publicly simply because they aren’t at the same level. They blog rants on fat people, vegans, and pop rock enthusiasts.

Most cultures do this already so why complain about this one? The thing about hipsters is that their culture seems to center on individuality, being you and to be as open-minded as possible. And when you think about it, these central ideals wouldn’t really make much sense considering some hipsters may go out of their way to bring a person or a group of people down. This brings me to the point of this entry: hipsters should not act so negatively.

Throughout the years, race and ethnicity has been an issue in the United States. Why add to ethnic culture another aspect like fat, punk, or hip-hop culture? Sure it’s only natural for one group to reject another because they don’t share the same interests. I mean, they wouldn’t be in a group if they didn’t have similar interests. But everyone’s different and it’s not right to hate on someone because they don’t have the same interests or style. Differences make the world interesting and if hipsters continue with these rants against various groups of people, it wouldn’t be very open-minded of them. Besides, if this bringing down of people continues, hipsters lose an opportunity to meet new people. Seriously, differences make the world interesting.

And I realize this entry seems somewhat of a paradox when I’m sort of bringing down hipsters yet at the same time telling them to quit hating on vegans.

Not that I’m vegan or anything.

But I guess I really have no say on the issue considering I don’t think of myself as a hipster at all. I’ve never been a part of the culture; I’ve always been observing from the outside. Then again, I bear certain attributes of a hipster. I can dress weird sometimes. I’ve gone to my share of indie rock concerts. And even though it’s a very distinct culture, actual hipsters deny the fact they are hipsters. Look at this webcomic for example. So I may be a hipster?
